Ramps Across America

Ramps Across America, Inc.

Ramps Across America is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to provide individuals with mobility restrictions a safe ramp for their home. Ramps Across America’s goal is to enable individuals to become as independent as their mobility allows.

Ramps Across America’s volunteers provide labor in constructing code-compliant ramps.

RAMPS Across America, Inc. was a dream of its founder, Judy Head, an active bilateral, above the knee amputee whose dream had been to form an organization to help individuals with mobility restrictions.

The Bon Secours Health System became the catalyst for the realization of RAMPS Across America with its “Ramp It Up” and “Seniors Helping Seniors” campaigns in 2006 and 2007. Volunteers come from local civic organizations, military branches, high schools and healthcare providers to name a few. Ramps Across America enjoys support from a variety of corporate and individual sponsors.

Judy Head founded RAMPS Across America after a serious illness resulted in the loss of both her legs above the knees. Until that time she had been employed as licensed Practical Nurse and the mother of two teenage children. As the result of her disability she was unable to work, however she became active serving in her community on the Newport News Mayors Committee for People with Disabilities for 10 years, being a volunteer at the Riverside Rehabilitation Institute, working at the Peninsula Agency on Aging with seniors as a State Health Insurance Program counselor, as a member of Age and Abilities committee, and becoming a disability advocate for anyone in need in her community especially her fellow amputees. She is a well recognized member of her community and continues to work to improve the lives of the other-abled.
